How fast does sound travel through metal?

It depends on whether you mean longitudinal or shear sound waves – their velocities are significantly different. It also depends on which metal – the two speeds vary significantly depending on whether you mean steel, lead, silver, gold, beryllium, or whatever.

A few examples are given in the link, with a range in those few examples from 1200 meters/sec to more than 12,000 meters/sec.
