Lightning strikes at about 224,000 mph or about 3,700 miles per second, however, according to a news report, the lightning we see is travelling at the speed of light 670 million mph, or 186,000 miles per second.
Lightning is quantified in the terms “flash” and “stroke”. A lightning flash, which lasts approximately one fifth of a second, is comprised of hundreds of rapid strokes. Lightning detection technology enables us to predict where lightning will strike up to a half an hour in advance. The rate of travel of thunder has been measured at one mile every five seconds.
