In a charging run, a lion can reach a speed of about 50 miles per hour. Probably not coincidently, this is also the approximate speed of some of the most common antelope which many lions feed on in the African savanna. For comparison, a typical maximum speed for a human is about 28 miles per hour. On the other hand, a cheetah can reach a speed of 70 miles per hour over a 100-yard distance.
Like the cheetah, the lion can only maintain this “charging run” over a very short distance. It cannot by any means run 50 mph in a lengthy pursuit of prey.
