Average container ship speed is between 20-26 knots, equivalent to 23-30MPH. As container ships have become larger over the years, there has been a demand for higher service speeds – therefore higher speeds are directly proportional to higher load capacity. Ships with capacities <1,500TEU travel around 9-15 knots, ranging up to high capacity ships (>6,000TEU) that travel up to 26 knots.
A TEU is a Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit, which is the number of 20’x8’x8.5′ containers it can carry.
