The average cruising speed of a sea turtle is about 1.5-2.3 kph (0.9-1.4 mph). Leatherback sea turtles have been recorded at speeds of up to 9.3 kph (5.8 mph). The 1992 Guinness Book of Records claims, “the fastest speed claimed and proven by any reptile is 22 mph by a frightened pacific leatherback.”

The green sea turtle can swim as fast as 35mph underwater, and surface every few minutes to breathe.
