On land, river otters can run quite well, if not quite as effectively as they swim. Information on the Alabama river otter suggests that “if frightened or alarmed, otters can run at speeds up to 18 miles per hour.”
On land, otters are able to run as fast as a person can run. If they are running on ice or hard snow, they can go even faster. In water, they are able to swim at speeds of approximately 6 mph.
