Hopping speed can reach up to 40mph. The kangaroo balances itself while hopping with its very strong tail.
The kangaroo is actually the only animal that uses hopping as a form of movement. Over short distances it can get as fast as 45 mph and can also hop at speeds up to 25 mph over a distance of 2 km. Kangaroos are very efficient when it comes to hopping, however it is difficult for them to walk normally. They use the tail and fore limbs to help crawl in short distances, so most of the time they use hopping as a quicker way to get around.
