There are many types of bats.  How bats fly depends on the species, what it eats, and where it lives.  Bats that fly in treetops fly slower inorder to maintain safety.  Bats that fly in the open, however, fly up to 50 miles per hour.

The world’s fastest bat is the Mexican free-tailed bat, which can reach speeds of 60 miles per hour. It’s interesting that bats are flying creatures today, because it is believed that they may have evolved from wingless, four-limbed creatures that has short from limbs and long rear limbs.
