How far in the sky does lightning come from?

Since the electric charges that cause lighting are found in the clouds, it would be safe to assume that the actual flashes of lightning start within this area. Low clouds are situated about 2,000 m (6,500 feet) up in the sky. As a result, lightning can come from the sky about 6,500 feet and up.
