Just recently (in 2009), a woman named Jennifer Figge swam from Africa to Venezuela, which is the shortest distance that someone could swim and still cross the Atlantic Ocean. It took her 24 days to travel 3100 miles.
In 1967, a man named Benoit Lecomte swam from France to Massachusetts. He swam the 3,716 mile journey in 73 days.
Correction: Benoit swam the ocean in 1998; he was BORN in 1967. Also, this is the link for Jennifer Figge: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=3891711
Unfortunately, the Associated Press article about Jennifer Figge’s transatlantic swim was soon after questioned and it was found that she only swam about 250 of the 2,500 miles.
