Tree pruning depends greatly on the age of the tree. I will append a guide to tree trimming that looks useful. It denotes that different trees will require different heights of lateral limb removal, and this can also differ based on the location the tree is planted. They state “the lowest limbs of a pin oak along a residential street may need to be more than 20 feet from the ground, whereas a dogwood in a shade garden may only need to be 3 feet from the ground”.
I also found another source that states you should avoid trimming oaks between April and October to avoid a disease called oak wilt.
