How far down into the earth do oil drills penetrate?

    I think it depends on where you are drilling because it is the geological setting that produces the oil reserve. I found an article talking about off shore deep ocean drilling where it quoted going through “7,000 feet of water, over 10,000 feet of sand and rocks as well as another 6,000 feet of salt” which can get to be quite expensive and labour intensive!
