It depends on the species, common harvester ants dig down about 15 feet on average. Other species will dig down as deep as 40 feet. Ants dig deep in the soil so that they can go deep and be warm in the winter. It also is important protection from burrowing predators.
One species of ant, the Pogonomyrmex badius has an average nest depth of 7 feet with the average number of chambers being 100 and housing a colony of approximately 5,000 ants.
