Salt water fish and fresh water fish differ mainly in the way their kidneys react to the salt in the water. Salt water fish can filter the salt out, fresh water fish cannot. Some fish have evolved adaptations which allow them to pass from salt to fresh water.
If a fish has this adaptation, there is no reason it oculd not go on living indefinitely from the ocean (salt water) to a river (fresh water) (barring unforseen deaths such as being eaten by a predator).
