The distance between Earth and Mars depends on where they are located in their orbits around the sun. When they are on the same side of the sun, they can be as close as 54.6 million km. When they are at the opposite sides of the sun, they can be as far apart as 401 million km. This explains Mars’ varying brightness in the night sky.
