Male and female lions can both roar, but the male’s roar is louder. Female and male roars sound different. A male lion’s roar can be heard up to 5 miles away by humans. When lions are solitary, they tend to be quiet, but when they are with other lions, they are much louder.
Lions tend to roar starting with a few deep, long roars that trail off into a series of shorter ones. They most often roar at night, which can be heard from a distance of up to 5.0 miles. It is used to advertise the animal’s presence and lions have the loudest roar of any big cat.
