A bloodhounds sense of smell has a normal range in terms of distance–their abilities lie in their advanced olfactory senses that take in smells 40 times more efficiently than the human nose. Given a particular scent, they’ve been known to follow a trail for up to 130 miles.
A bloodhound’s sense is smell is so good that it is more than 1,000 times better than that of a human. Their nose is specially designed for smelling, and they have about 40 times the number of olfactory cells, or “scent receptors” than humans. The loose, wrinkled skin around the nose trap smells, pushing them into the nose and creating an “odor image”, like a photograph. The dog is able to use this image to track the scent for as long as it remains or until the source is found, even more than one hundred miles.
