How exactly do carbon offsets work?

Carbon offsets in principle are rather simple. If you are going to pollute, find a way to undo the damage. Trees convert CO2 into oxygen. So if you are going to drive a car which releases CO2, then if you plant a tree which will take that CO2 and turn it back into oxygen, you are in effect offsetting the damage you have done. Companies provide a means for doing so commercially. They will accept cash for the planting of trees or the purchasing of environmentally challenged lands. Some will even buy up Carbon emission allowances and not actually pollute anything at all. This way the companies who want to pollute so they can manufacture or produce their goods (and have to buy the rights to do so) cannot pollute.
