How is the environment important to humans?

The environment supports human life on this planet. Microbes and organisms aerate soil and are part of nutrient cycles that enable humans to grow food for consumption. Plants and animals provide food and clothing necessary for survival. Stone formations, forests, and other materials enable humans to shelter themselves. Ecosystem services provided by the environment are critical to human survival. These services include decomposition, oxygen production, seed dispersal, flood mitigation, water purification, and much more. In addition, species on this planet make our lives much richer culturally (think of all the plants, animals, and formations you’ve heard of in mythology and stories!) and provide enjoyment through beauty and recreation (kayaking, climbing, hiking, etc.)
