How is environmental engineering different than civil engineering?

Civil engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with designing, creating, and maintaining our built environment such as bridges, streets, dams, buildings, etc.  It is building and creating actual structures.  Environmental engineering, a related branch, deals with improving the environment, working in areas such as pollution control, waste disposal, recycling and public health amongst others.  The two branches often meet – for example, a environmental civil engineer could work on designing a water treatment plant, combining environmental improvement with creating the built environment.
