How is energy used in making plastic bottles?

Plastics take a lot of energy to produce and are very hard to recycle. Not including the energy for transportation, it is estimated that it takes 17 million barrels of oil required for American bottled water consumption. This doesn’t even take into account soda and sport drinks. It is also estimated that it takes 3 liters of water to produce one liter of bottled water. After consumption, a bottle is likely to sit in a landfill where it will essentially never decompose, or it will be recycled in an energy inefficient way. Even after its production and use it is taking energy as waste.
