Transmission of energy with a laser is somewhat inefficient, comparatively, as it must be converted to light energy to be transmitted (although there are quantum cascade lasers that correct this.) Another inefficiency (that is shared with microwave transmission) is the necessity of the target to be in the direct line of sight of the beam. However, despite these drawbacks, laser and microwave transmission of power are relatively efficient methods of energy transmission, and are widely used.
