How is the efficiency of insulation rated?

Insulation efficiency is rated through giving it an R value.  The R value represents the insulation’s abillity to resist heat flow.  The higher the R value is, the better the insulation resists heat flow aka the more efficient it is.  The R values can sometimes be misleading because the ratings tests are done at conditions 70 degrees Fahrenheit and no air movement – usually when insulation is needed most, conditions are not so mild.  The average recommended rating for US homes is R-12.
