How effective is the seasonal flu vaccine?

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website states: “Past studies have shown in years when the vaccine viruses and circulating viruses are well-matched, the vaccine can reduce the chances of getting the flu by 70% to 90% in healthy adults.”  The percentages are not as high for the elderly and young children but it is still better than no vaccine.  It is also important to remember that the seasonal vaccine does not work against H1N1 and, because of changes in the virus, you have to get the vaccine every year.
