How effective can E-waste offsets be?

The concept of e-waste offsets is fairly recent, so it has not been fully tested in the real world yet. The basic idea is that companies will pay to have a certain amount of e-waste exported from Africa or other third world areas, and safely dismantled. As with any offset program there are concerns about effectiveness. For one thing, many of the criteria that the E-Waste Foundation has are vague and unclear, especially when it comes to how the e-waste will be disposed of safely once it is out of Africa. The main fear is that despite the good intentions of e-waste offsets, the problem will persist because it is so difficult to affectively deal with e-waste. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
