There are a variety of ways places that don’t have sewers get rid of human waste. On the positive side, people can utilize composting toilets or living machines to handle the waste naturally and turn it into a nutrient. Also, in many suburbs and rural areas septic systems are used to treat waste on a household level by allowing it to settle and filter in large fields of different soil types. On the worst end of the spectrum are areas that dispose of their waste directly into surrounding rivers and streams. While this type of strategy is extremely harmful and seldom, if ever, seen in developed areas, developing countries still struggle with such poor habits as these for lack of alternative methods.
