There’s precious little research on the safety or toxicity of GM food crops, but some scientists are opposed to them on the basis of their possible harm to the environment. Many of the modifications involve making the plants more hardy against diseases, bacteria or other pests. Some researchers are concerned that these may be breeding super-pests resistant to the new genes. That puts even other types of food, which are not genetically modified, at higher risk for the increased potency of these super-pests.
