How does using bleach affect the environment?

There are a lot of companies that have been caught dumping bleach into lakes and rivers, effectively wiping out the local wildlife population in doing so. When bleach mixes with other products or certain organic compounds in can become a carcinogen for both humans and animals. The release of bleach into an environment acts as a poison and can kill plants and animals within hours if enough is released.
