How does the underwater kite generate electricity?

The Minesto’s Deep Green kite consists of a wing and a turbine and generator attached to it and harnesses tidal power. Due to the wing, it moves quickly in an 8-shaped pattern underwater, directed by a tether to stay on the trajectory. As the result, the actual flow of water through the turbine is claimed to be ten times faster than that of the tidal current. Furthermore, Minesto says that the produced energy varies with the cube of the water flow, which means that a tenfold increase in the flow results in a thousandfold increase in energy produced. That way a small kite should be able to substitute a much larger stationary turbine, resulting in significant cost savings.
