The tide can have numerous effects on different fish species. During high tides, many smaller fish venture into estuaries and bays in search of food that is marooned up shore during low tides. Ironically, it is during low tides that ground dwellers like crabs forage these grounds while fish must retreat to deeper waters. Additionally, many fish are at the mercy of the tides for spawning and mating, salmon for instance which must return to freshwater to produce their young.
