When fires burn in areas that are difficult to reach with trucks, aerial techniques are used. Fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters, and even bombers can be fitted with tanks of water or fire retardant chemicals to drop on the fire.
Aerial firefighting is usually conducted in coordination with ground firefighters. Water and foam are dropped on the fire perimeter and troublesome “hot spots” in close proximity to the ground firefighters. Long-term fire retardant is used, both, directly attack the fire and to indirectly flank the fire’s edge. The fireline’s suppression should be reinforced by dropping on additional retardant outside the fireline.
