How does terracing help a farm be more efficient?

Terracing a hill for farming helps prevent erosion from water runoff. It helps each layer receive the same amount of water opposed to water rushing down from the top of the hill and flooding the bottom while removing topsoil in the process. This is especially important on water intensive crops such as rice. Also, the terraced areas are easier to harvest than a steep hill.
