How does the temperature at the time of formation influence the shape of snowflakes?

When the temperature reaches 32 degrees F or lower, snowflakes can begin to form. Snowflakes that form in warmer temperature grow more slowly leading to a smoother, less intricate shape. Depending on the temperature, different shapes can be formed. For example between 32-35 degrees F, thin hexagonal plates form and between 10 to 3 degrees F, lacy hexagonal shapes called dendrites form.
