How does a spring get contaminated before it reaches the surface?

There are many ways for a spring to get contaminated, but seepage is a major one. Manure, gasoline–basically any contaminant–can soak into soil and reach underground water sources. Also, if there’s contamination at any point in the water cycle, rainwater itself can contaminate springs.
