How does solar wind affect the Earth?

Solar wind affects the earth’s magnetosphere.  Magnetospheric substorms occur due to the solar winds, and magnetic storms are the effect.  Aurora (or northern lights) are the direct effect of the solar winds as well, due to the weather of space.  The continuity of charged particles that makes up the solar wind can also affect satellites and other communication devices.
