Conserving soil means preventing erosion and maintaining overall health. This is extremely important for us–soil is the literal foundation of our livelihood. Healthy soil is necessary to maintain the ecosystems that cycle water, nitrogen, and carbon on our planet. It is in soil that we grow our food. Erosion and desertification have a direct impact on our lives because they impact soil fertility and thus our ability to draw sustanence from the ground. Sedimentation and chemical pollution in streams and rivers affects water quality, an obvious issue for us and aquatic/marine systems.
