how does so much sewage get to our oceans?

A lot of sewage is untreated, particularly in developing nations.  In the US, sewage must be treated to a certain level before it can be released into the ocean.  However, many other countries simply dump their raw, untreated sewage directly in to the sea.  This creates degraded marine wild life conditions as well as wreaking havoc on costal ecosystems.  It also creates a biological hazard for any ocean going humans.
