Since 2002 the Sierra Club has campaigned and lobbied against coal power plants. This grassroots movement has gained momentum. In July 2011 NYC Mayor Bloomberg pledged 50 million dollars to the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal initiative.

The Beyond Coal initiative aims to convert aging coal power plants to clean energy. They have formed community activism nationwide and lobbied in Washington for change. They have created jobs, installed solar panels, and educated the public about the dangers of coal.
