When hardscapes are exposed to open sunlight they are subject to the urban heat island (UHI) effect. Hardscapes absorb and hold more sunlight which creates warmer temperature for surrounding areas. Providing shade to your hardscapes curbs the UHI effect; the less sunlight that reaches your hardscape, the lower the temperatures surrounding your hardscape, the less you will have to spend on cooling your home.
