It helps the Earth in many many ways. However, namely it is because energy production (non-renewable energy that is) is terrible for the Earth. Drilling in the ground is horrible for a local ecosystem, not to mention that refining process which throws out tons of pollution. Therefore on a simple level the less energy consumption the less is needed, which would in turn be great for the Earth.
Saving energy helps conserve natural resources that are extracted from the earth. For example, oil resources are harvested from the middle east, which affects the local ecosystem, then the oil is shipped to a location which requires more energy consumption, just for an individual to use the oil to add pollution to the earth. So if we could conserve oil and find alternative transportation, then the oil production could slow requiring less harm to the environment.
