how does salinity affect fish?

A: It depends on the fish. Some fish are equipped with the ability to regulate their body’s intake of salt and water, in such a way that they are adaptable to both fresh and saltwater bodies. Most freshwater fish, when introduced to saltwater bodies, will lose water and gain salt at such an extreme rate, that it leads to fatal consequences. Likewise, if a saltwater fish is introduced to freshwater, they lose salt and gain water, also leading to death.
