Salinity in a given body of water can influence many aspects of the lives the fish living in them carry out. Salinity has been shown to affect development and growth and, in most species, egg fertilization and incubation, yolk sac resorption, early embryogenesis, swimbladder inflation, larval growth. Due to these factors that are influenced by different various levels of salinity, results can impact a fish’s standard metabolic rate, food intake, food conversion, and hormone stimulation. So as you can see, salinity plays a large part in determining whether or not a certain body of water is a suitable habitat for a specific species of fish.
