How does putting nitrogen in your tires help gas mileage?

There are mixed reviews on this. Apparently nitrogen leaks out of tires at a slower rate than air, so tires stay inflated longer and maintain maximum fuel efficiency. The argument however, is that people in general aren’t usually aware that they are running on low tires. Under-inflated tires are a large contributer to global warming and have caused drivers to waste billions of dollars in fuel. So whether they are inflated with nitrogen or air, people need to become more aware of their tire pressure and check it more often.
