How does the government protect threatened species?

The government can take many measure to protect threatened species. Firstly, they usually outlaw the hunting or killing of the animal imposing large fines and/or jail time. Second they can protect the habitat of the animal from development. For very endangered animals sometimes there are even reintroduction programs like that of the gray wolf where animals from captivity or from other parts of the world are released into the wild.
