While platinum mining has its benefits, mainly providing jobs for many people and has a major effect on the economy, there are a large number of ways that mining can negatively affect the environment. First off, in order to build a mine, large areas of the forest need to be cleared, not just for the mine but for residential areas for the workers to stay outside of the mine. This on its own has a negative affect on the environment as it disrupts the balance of the ecosystem, however, the amount of chemicals that are disposed into rivers as well as the soil provides a much more dangerous affect. Chemicals such as mercury and sulfuric acid contaminate the water and soil and can lead to harmful diseases for nearby residents.
