How does penicillin fight disease?

Penicillin is an antibiotic that kills bacteria by inhibiting their capability to form a cell wall. Bacteria need a cell wall to keep their internal machinery in, and foreign items out.  Penicillin will prevent the ability of bacteria to duplicate and eventually weaken the wall enough to kill them.  You can see pictures of normal and penicillin treated bacteria here
