How does peak oil work?

The idea is that we only have a certain amount of oil in the ground, and peak oil is the time at which we are drawing the most of it out of the ground. As we find new reserves and develop better technology to pull oil out of the ground, production rises. As our oil reserves get depleted, it gets harder and harder to find new sources of oil, so production drops. Here is a link that explains it in more detail.
