How does one test air quality?

Pollution can be measured from a know volume of air via diffusion. Certain pollutants that pass through the sample tube will turn into another form and collect inside the tube. From there, one can measure the amount of pollutant per volume. Other techniques require the application of chemicals in a laboratory to determine the magnitude of pollutants in a given volume.
