Basically, plants will not grow and then will eventually die without nitrogen. Nitrogen is a part of chlorophyll, and thus a necessary part of photosynthesis. Most of the nitrogen in the world is available in gaseous forms, which most plants can not absorb. Nitrogen-fixing plants are able to draw nitrogen from the air with the help of a bacteria called rhizobium.
