The neurotoxin hexane, which is used to pull the fat out of the soybeans to make it appear healthier, may not even be present in the final product. Hexane has a very low boiling point (about 69 F) and there is no proof that trace amounts are found in the burger. Scientists argue more than the evaporation of hexane is the problems, as it can lead to childhood asthma. In one study with hens, it was shown that the animals had to eat excessive amounts of the veggie burgers before they saw even the slightest adverse affects.
